Full of history the valleys are well known for such things as James Hogg - the Ettrick Shepherd, Aikwood Tower - the home of Lord and Lady Steel, and the stunning 18th century Ettrick Kirk.

• The Ettrick Valley runs for 26 miles along the river, from the Potburn, near the Dumfriesshire border, to the eastern edge of Selkirk. The Yarrow runs from St Mary's Loch to the outskirts of Selkirk at Philiphaugh.
